DEAR DIARY
performative interruptions of public spaces
Vienna (AUT), 2023
portfolio
Fungi are considered life-enabling delicacy and detested weed. In spaces they share with humans their right to exist is dependent on their functionality. This phenomenon is apparent in spaces cohabitated by human and non-human species.

In this public action a fantastical being spontaneously appears in public spaces in Vienna. Like a fungal growth, she exposes her environment to her presence – uncontrollable and without apparent functionality. The passers-byes (in-)voluntarily move through the public space that has become performative. Herby a space is opened in which different forms of (non-) interaction arise. Passer-byes actively ignore, film, or protect the performer as the embodiment of fantasy.

Dear Diary
The pressing issue of mass-extinction has reached Helena, a self-proclaimed bubble gum activist. Her attempt at resolution interrupts the flow of daily activity in Vienna.
The performative act is executed during a week – long series of roadblocks by the climate activist group “The Last Generation”. Dear Diary takes up the fleeting nature of performance. What change remains in space once the performative act is over? What if there is no objectively true evidence of the act? Did any change even happen?
